In a construction project, equipment choices should be based on the size and extent of the job to be done. Two of the more common choices are backhoes and skid steer loaders. When choosing between these two powerful options, you should start with a good idea of what the job will be and the difference between a backhoe and a skid steer loader.

Types of Jobs

Both backhoes and skid steer loaders might be used for:

  • Digging foundations
  • Clearing ground
  • Loading or moving debris
  • Moving heavy supplies and material
  • Digging trenches for underground installations.

Whether a backhoe or skid steer loader is more appropriate depends on the conditions of the site and your specific requirements for the job.

Backhoes

Backhoes consist of a tractor-like body with a loader on the front end and a excavator on the back end. This combination means that more tasks can be accomplished with a single piece of machinery. There are no delays while accessories are changed.

Backhoes are versatile and can be used in relatively small spaces. They can be moved easily and can attain higher speeds than skid loaders. The larger body means there is better visibility when using a backhoe.

Skid Steer Loaders

Skid steer loaders are smaller and more compact than backhoes, which means they are usually more maneuverable and can work in smaller spaces. They do not have an excavator on the back, but do have a loader mounted on the front. In addition, the front-end loader can be replaced with other accessories that allow it to do more than a backhoe. These accessories include augers for drilling holes, angle brooms, and backhoe-style excavators.

Since they are not as large as backhoes, skid steer loaders are easier to transport using smaller trailers or trucks. In addition, operators do not need a license to operate a skid steer loader.
